Although action research pushes teacher development forward, it has its own limitations in time, resources and cultural background. This approach is not for everyone. For one thing, it makes demands on teachers’ time, and also requires the ability to look at evidence of their own practice in a more objective way than teachers normally do. Nevertheless, if they can find the time and energy to do it, and they find it congenial, there is ample evidence that this approach can provide all sorts of interesting and helpful professional insights.
The first limitation is that in time. Limited time and heavy burden of work are the realistic difficulties that prevent teachers participating 辅导博士论文
action research. Most teachers are very busy in their daily teaching activity. They have to prepare for their lessons and correct assignments. Besides, they have a lot more work to do such as the analysis of test papers, the participation of conferences, the engagement in advanced studies, and the housework of their family. To some teachers, doing action research seems to be an extra task that will lay an even greater burden on them. Therefore, they are hesitating to be involved in it.
The second limitation is that in resources. Many teachers lack opportunities to communicate with the external experts and their limited knowledge hinders the communication with experts and colleagues. They are assigned the teaching materials but not the room to reflect and discuss. Although action research offers teachers opportunity, they don’t know how to employ the resources. Without experiencing strict training in pedagogy or language teaching, teachers don’t know how to identify problems, collect data, analyze data and write formal action research report.
The third limitation is that in cultural environment. Many teachers are accustomed to teaching in their own classroom without being disturbed or observed from others. Therefore, some of them don’t welcome any innovation. Those who are keen on educational revolution are not welcomed, understood and supported. It is not very easy for a teacher to carry out an action research without a support.
The limitations do not mean that it is not necessary for teachers to carry out the research in order to promote their professional development. The implementation of action research is of vital importance to educational innovation and professional development. We need to face the difficulties and find out solutions.Although it has its own problems and limitations, action research is a powerful approach of enhancing professional development of college English teachers, and bridging the gap between theory and practice and has become more and more popularized. Studying and reflecting on this approach is of vital importance to foreign language teacher development research.
